Children are the saviours who bring energy and strength to adults the world over.

It was from that concept that the contemporary art piece BALAKA BOSATU (Child Bodhisattva) was sketched and completed.

"Balaka-bosatsu" is a Buddhist-themed artwork design created with the unique Unissograff™ technique.

"婆羅華菩薩像 Balaka-bosatsu" ~All children are Buddha~
≪Origin≫
* बालक → "Balaka" = The original Sanskrit word for Buddhism, which means 'child'.
≪Meaning≫
* The first two characters of "Balaka" 婆羅 in Sanskrit carry the meaning of "nature" - the innate nature of being - and when combined with 華 ("ka" meaning flower), represent 'a nature that blooms with a flower = the child's Buddha = the Bodhisattva Baraka'.
"Bosatsu" (菩薩) is the Japanese translation of the Sanskrit word "bodhisattva" (an enlightened person who has delayed entering paradise in order to help others attain enlightenment).

This artwork features a collage of the 'pictures of home' drawn by children living in the minefield regions of Cambodia and the painted footprints of children in Uganda as they took part in a local folk dance.
The artistry conveys the importance of children as an indispensable presence for the peace and love that societies impart to all adults.

"I believe that through any simple contact with children, as adults and parents we can come to know our own essence and purpose. That is why I chose to use the silent rakugaki art pictures of children as a tool of communication, to convey their will and presence, and re-awaken our own innate sense of benevolence".

Terra Renaissance logo image

Unissograff™ generates funding to support the education and well-being of children in the minefield villages of Cambodia, and the social rehabilitation of young people who were engaged as child soldiers in the civil conflicts of Uganda.
Additionally, we are pleased to announce that in 2022 we have added support for children in Laos, the most heavily bombed country in the world.

Currently all donations generated by artwork created from the rakugaki drawings made by children in Cambodia, Laos and Uganda are made to Terra Renaissance, an officially certified NPO organisation based in Kyoto which stations its people on the ground in the Kingdom of Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic and the Republic of Uganda to actively support the people of these aforementioned areas.

This way we know that our donations are 100% used for the purpose with which they were intended, supporting the areas they were intended for.

Terra, means "earth" in Latin, while Renaissance refers to "regeneration, reconstruction" in English. The name "Terra Renaissance" therefore represents "revival and revitalisation."

They aim to address the four issues of "land mines", "small weapons", "child soldiers", and "peace education" by simultaneously operating international cooperation at sites around the world while conducting enlightenment and proposal activities in Japan.

Great Art with a heart and a story

I love the piece I bought. It is something that I can tell a story about. When you look at the piece close, you can see the children's doodles and it makes you think what their life must be like. Like all good art it tugs on your heart and mind.
